Rugby in the far south

Closer to Cape Horn than Buenos Aires

Because rugby in the city of Comodoro Rivadavia, the most important city of the Argentine Patagonia province of Chubu, was in decline veterans of different clubs joined together to form Alacranes in 1991

Alacranes

Ricardo Silva points out that Alacranes are not veterans of ‘a’ club. They are in fact veterans of several clubs. One of the premises at the time of formation, was to work for the good of rugby in the city and region. Alacranes members were involved with different clubs as Managers, Leaders, Coaches, Infant Trainers, Referees etc, etc and today, all clubs have improved thanks to this initiative, with Alacranes in all clubs in the city.

Also, for geographical reasons, they have given very great support to rugby in the city of Coyhaique (southern Chile), integrating people from that region in Alacranes.

Since its creation in 1991, Alacranes has been involved in the Argentine Veterans tournaments, which are held every year in different cities around Argentina, normally in October.

Internationally, we have participated in the following Golden Oldies:

• 1993 - Dublin (Ireland)
• 1995 - Christchurch (New Zealand)
• 1998 - Cape Town (South Africa)
• 1999 - Adelaide (Australia)
• 2001 - Toulouse (France)
• 2014 - Mar del Plata (Argentina)
• 2018 - Christchurch (New Zealand)
• 2021 - Denver (USA)

Rugby gives us many beautiful things and I can tell you that Alacranes has FRIENDS in many different parts of the world who have played at some point in the Alacranes playing jersey. Among them are Nico Duploj (Wellington Dukes - South Africa), Kevin Kiri (XXXX - Australia), Geoff Philips and Bob Costin (Easts Toothless Tigers - Australia), Frank Ortiz, Gonzalo Ortiz and Leighton Evans (Crippled Crows - Australia) and Mike Lyons (Ngatitoa Jugglers - New Zealand).

As an anecdote, I can tell you that since meeting them in Kevin Kiri and Frank Ortiz in 1999 have played for the Alacranes. When a small group of Scorpions went to watch the World Cup Rugby in New Zealand, both Frank in Adelaide (Australia), and Mike Lyons in Wellington (New Zealand), welcomed us into their respective homes giving us all their hospitality and acting as tour guides.

Rugby in general gives you the possibility to meet people from different parts of the world and no matter how much time passes ... .. that FRIENDSHIP will always be in force, being able to share a rugby field, a beer or as in the cases mentioned, the hospitality of a friend who receives you at home ... and that, I think is the essence of the Veteran.

See you in Denver
